Wenonah Escape

From making a weekend suicide trip to Minnesota with my dad and 2 friends to pick it up, to finishing the Texas Water Safari this Wenonah Escape has fit the bill. I have done many modifications to it and this page will go through its progression.

The first thing I did was beef up the stern and bow by adding extra thwarts respectively. This made the gunwales stiffer up in front and back.

The boat was a year old rental in the Boundry Waters in Minnesota but was in great condition. I have heard many stories of kevlar and carbon canoes tearing or cracking during training or racing on the San Marcos River and I wanted to make mine as strong as possible while keeping the weight and cost down. I added closed cell foam for flotation and the jug holders. You need the boat to still stay somewhat afloat if it submerges.

Using stretchy painters tape I marked off the area that needed to be epoxied. I pretty much guess at the typical water line. I used 80 grit sand paper and an orbital sander. It was intimidating starting it but once I got going there was no turning back.
